Rishabh Pant Health Update – Pant ICC ODI World CUP? Not just IPL 2023 or Asia Cup 2023, Rishabh Pant is likely to miss World Cup 2023 as well. The young wicketkeeper-batter underwent ligament reconstruction surgery in Mumbai last week. However, the job is only half done. He will be under the knife yet again in another six weeks’ time. A senior BCCI official confirmed to InsideSport that “it is very tough for Rishabh to be fit for World Cup.” Follow India Cricket LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN.
“It’s too early to say when he will return. But as per his latest medical reports, it doesn’t sound good. He will miss at least 8-9 months of action and is most likely out of World Cup as well. But it all depends on how his next surgery goes,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.
Rishabh Pant Surgery: In a three-hour marathon surgery, Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala reconstructed Pant’s posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament as per an ESPNCricinfo report. However, doctors did not go ahead with the reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament.
Rishabh has damaged all three ligaments in his right knee. While doctors reconstructed three of the ligaments, it will take another six weeks for the 2nd surgery on the third ligament.
Pant’s return to the cricket field depends on his rehab and the training he undergoes once he is discharged from the hospital. Pant is expected to be in the hospital at least for the next one week. In the coming days, he will be made to walk with the help of a walker and support. But he will once again return to hospital in six weeks’ time for the 2nd surgery.
Following Rishabh Pant’s horrific accident on December 30, on the Dehradun-Delhi highway, the cricket fraternity has been left shell-shocked.
On January 08th, Rishabh Pant underwent first of his two surgeries that lasted for close to three hours. The first one was conducted on his knee ligament tear he suffered during the horrific car crash. But he is still set for a lengthy period on the bench as he will have another surgery on his ankle ligament injury.
The sources close to BCCI’s medical team informed InsideSport that doctors at the hospital feel Pant will need a minimum of 8-9 months to make a comeback on the field. This means, not only he will miss IPL 2023 but can also miss Asia Cup 2023 & ODI World CUP in October.
How long does ligament surgery recovery take? – It is still unclear the severity of his tear. He had undergone an MRI in Dehradun on his brain and spinal chord. But due to swelling and pain, doctors had to abandon MRI on his knee and ankle. The severity will only be ascertained when the swelling subsides a bit. But as per preliminary tests, it appears that Pant will need surgery for both ankle and knee.
A knee ligament surgery usually takes 6 months. But considering, he is a wicketkeeper – he needs to strengthen his knees more before returning to competitive cricket. Once the doctors determine the damage, they will be able to say how long the recovery will take.
Series Rishabh Pant will miss:
India vs New Zealand (3 ODIs, 3 T20s) – January-February
India vs Australia (4 Tests & 3 ODIs) – February-March
IPL 2023 (April-May)
World Test Championship Final (If India qualifies) – June
India Tour of West Indies (July)
Asia Cup 2023 – September
ICC ODI World CUP – Oct / Nov – Can miss depending on severity of LIGAMENT Tear.
